Most Ruidoso visitors think Grindstone Lake has two settings: Wibit season and off-season. If you live within earshot of the boat ramp, you know that's wrong. There are at least four settings, and the switches between them fall on very specific dates over the next eight weeks.
The lake you drive past in early August is not the lake you'll drive past on Labor Day, and neither of those is the lake that hosts the XTERRA World Championship in October. Here is how the calendar actually breaks, what changes on each hinge date, and how residents can use the shoulder weeks that out-of-town families never see.
The Calendar Hinge Nobody Puts On A Flyer
The Village markets Wibit as a Memorial Day through Labor Day attraction, which is true and also misleading. The real inflection point comes earlier. The Municipal Swimming Pool runs daily public swim through August 8, while the Wibit Water Park returns to Grindstone Lake starting May 23, 2026. After August 8, the operation contracts hard. The Wibit Water Park is open daily from Memorial Day Weekend through August 8, 2026, and then operates weekends only.
That means starting the second week of August, five out of every seven days at Grindstone look nothing like the July version. The floating obstacle course is still buoyed offshore, but the parking lot empties. Weekday mornings on the trails feel closer to October than to July.
What August 8 Actually Changes
If you live in the Grindstone Canyon corridor, this is the week your commute to your own lake gets easier. A few concrete shifts:

The $20 per person, card only pricing is worth flagging for anyone still telling guests to bring cash. That changed. Paid parking is in effect from May 23 through September 7. The height rule matters if you're hosting grandkids for a long weekend. Guests between 36 and 45 inches tall must be accompanied by an adult, and all participants are required to wear a life vest provided by staff. Bring-your-own vests are not accepted.
August 22: The Weekend To Reroute Your Morning Walk
If you use the trail system on Saturday mornings, mark this one. Join the Ruidoso Grindstone Trail Runs on August 22, 2026, at Wingfield Park in Midtown Ruidoso. Part of the 2026 Run Ruidoso Series, this popular trail running event features a 13.8-mile Half Marathon Heavy, 8.5-mile, 4-mile, and Kids' Dash. Proceeds benefit All-Season Adaptive Sports, supporting inclusive outdoor recreation in Ruidoso.
This is the twelfth running of the event, and the Half Marathon Heavy uses the same singletrack that residents ride and hike the rest of the year. The start and finish are downtown at Wingfield Park, but the middle of the course threads through the Grindstone Trails System. If you were planning a normal Saturday loop, that morning is a good day to either join the race, volunteer, or reroute to Cedar Creek instead.
The Trail Runs anchor a busier-than-average August 21 and 22 in Midtown. Enjoy a FREE evening of live music at Wingfield Park as Buddy Vargas performs for the 2026 Cool Summer Nights Summer Music Series on Friday, August 21, from 6–8 PM. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy live music in the heart of Midtown Ruidoso. The final Cool Summer Nights concert lands the following Friday, with High Desert Playboys perform on Friday, August 28, from 6–8 PM.
The September 7 Flip
Here is the date that matters most to residents, and the one the tourism sites bury. On September 8, the operating rules invert.
- Parking passes stop being required. Parking passes will not be required after September 7, 2026.
- Hours shift to Grindstone Lake Recreation Area returns to low-season operations after September 7, 2026, as follows: HOURS OF OPERATION: 5:00 am to 11:00 pm.
- Weekend reservations are dropped. If you're coming in the low season (effective around the start of September), reservations are not required for weekend visits, and you can use the area from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.
- The Wibit comes off the water. The water park and swimming are closed during the low season, but there are still many other things to do, such as kayaking, paddleboarding, disc golf on a 27-hole, par 81 wooded courses, picnicking, hiking, and more!

The connector network is worth knowing about if you haven't ridden the newer sections. Ruidoso's Grindstone Lake Trail System now has even more opportunities for recreation. Hike and bike brand-new trails located in Ruidoso, off of Carrizo Canyon road at Mud Canyon Rd. Constructed by EcoServants, the connector trails provide free access to the existing Grindstone Lakes Trail System. The Mud Canyon entry lets you skip the main lot entirely, which becomes handy again once October traffic arrives.
October Rewrites The Script
Do not settle into the low-season rhythm and forget what's coming. Grindstone is about to be one of the busiest trail systems in the state.
Ruidoso hosts the XTERRA World Championship October 8–11, 2026, marking XTERRA's 30th anniversary. Elite athletes compete across high-altitude swim, bike, and trail run courses set around Grindstone Lake, while visitors enjoy race-week excitement, cool October weather, and Ruidoso's distinctive mountain-town charm.
Anyone who lives near the trailheads should plan around race week the way they'd plan around Ironman weekend in July. Speaking of which, the 70.3 template is a useful reference for what closures look like. If you're visiting Ruidoso for IRONMAN 70.3, please be aware of temporary closures and parking changes during race week. Grindstone Lake, the Wibit Water Park, and the main parking area will be closed July 6–12. That was July. XTERRA in October will have its own footprint, and given the 30th anniversary billing, expect a larger athlete village and a busier stretch of Carrizo Canyon Road than a normal Ironman year.
The Alto Lake Asterisk
If your usual routine involves alternating between Grindstone and Alto Lake, note that Alto is still in recovery mode. Alto Lake remains open for fishing, picnicking, and enjoying the outdoors while recovery work continues on burned slopes below the lake through the end of August 2026. Trails below the dam and the Alto Lake Disc Golf Course are temporarily closed as crews complete erosion control and landscape restoration following the South Fork Fire.
That pushes more disc golfers over to Grindstone's 27-hole course, especially on weekends. If you play regularly, the low-season morning window from 5 AM onward gives you the emptiest tee pads you'll see all year.
A Resident's Shoulder-Season Loop
Between September 8 and October 7 there are exactly four weekends when the lake belongs to the people who live here. A simple morning I'd recommend:
- Park at the Mud Canyon connector off Carrizo Canyon Road instead of the main lot.
- Take the connector down to the lakeside loop, follow the water east, and pick up the climb to Grindstone Mesa. "The climb to Grindstone Mesa can be painful, but the payoff is anything but: Views of Sierra Blanca and surrounding mountains are spectacular."
- Loop back via the singletrack, count roughly 8-12 miles of beautiful single track mountain biking! Climbing is slow and gradual nothing technical on the shorter 8 mile section. if you're on a bike.
- Finish with breakfast in Midtown. A common local combination is coffee at Cornerstone Bakery followed by a shopping walk, which happens to also be the pattern Many visitors combine a trip to Grindstone Lake with exploring downtown Ruidoso, enjoying breakfast at places like Cornerstone Bakery or browsing local boutiques. use, only they do it on Saturdays in July and you get to do it on Saturdays in September.
Rules that carry through low season: Pets must be on a leash. A New Mexico fishing license for those 12 years and older is required. On the water, motorized vessels with electric trolling motors restricted to no wake speed, may be used on Grindstone Lake. Only non-motorized boats will be allowed on Alto Lake. Vessels which exceed 19 feet in length may not be used on Alto or Grindstone Lake. Trout stays the main catch. Have you been wondering what kind of fish are in Grindstone Lake? Grindstone is not a summer lake with a dead off-season. Wibit weekends still bring energy through Labor Day.
